why I love (and use!) art tutorials

When I quit drinking in 2016, I discovered much more free time. Although I painted and drew growing up, in my 20s and 30s, my creative energy went into developing my graphic design career. And then, evening times, a lot of energy went into the wine bottle 😉.

After my dad passed away in 2015, I was honored to be given his easel, brushes, and paints. They sat idle at first, but when I quit drinking about a year later, I was ready to try painting again. I found it was a relaxing and healthy way to spend my evenings and take my mind off the voice of the wine monster. But, I wasn’t always sure where to start. It was the same feeling I’ve sometimes encountered sitting down to write in a blank journal. Luckily, I found an amazing collection of art tutorials (in every medium) à la YouTube.

Ways I’ve used art tutorials:

  1. Learn new techniques. Art is constantly evolving, with new designs and styles always emerging. With so many different approaches to art, knowing where to start or how to improve your skills can be challenging. Art tutorials provide information on techniques, materials, and methods to help artists create better artwork. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned artist, there is always something new to learn from art tutorials.

  2. Get inspired. Creating art can be a solitary and isolating experience. Artists often work alone, without the benefit of feedback or collaboration. This can make it challenging to stay motivated and inspired, especially when faced with creative blocks or challenges. Art tutorials can help you get inspired by prompting new ideas, perspectives, and approaches to art. For example, watching a tutorial on a new technique or style can help you break out of your rut and spark new ideas if you are struggling with creative block. Similarly, if you feel uninspired or stuck in your artistic practice, watching a tutorial on a different medium or subject matter can help you explore new possibilities and expand your creative horizons.

  3. Improve your skills. To get better at anything, you’ve got to practice! However, knowing where to start or how to improve your skills can be challenging. Art tutorials can provide practice creations to enhance your skills and create better artwork.

Over the years, some of my favorites have come from Let’s Make Art. Not only do they post many of their tutorials for free, but they also sell complete supply kits.

I’ve taught tons of creators in my art workshops and repeatedly gotten the question, “Does this count as real painting?” My answer is a resounding “YES!” Sort of like cooking from a recipe; your delish dish still counts. You are still doing the work, putting the paint down in your own unique way, and the results of art that people produce during my tutorial workshops are individual creations! Never be ashamed of following guidance, using a reference photo, or using tools - that’s how you learn!

I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences using art tutorials!
